From international festivals to theatrical events and "history of the town" museum to independent gallery, Smederevo is rich in both arts and culture.
Each year the Smederevo Autumn Festival takes place in September in and around the city of Smederevo. It is devoted to fruits of autumn (fruits, grapes and wine) with carnival of medieval knights and a rich cultural and artistic program. In 1882 on World Fair in Bordeaux, wines from Smederevo received significant recognition. Winegrowers from Smederevo still keep the tradition of growing Smederevka and still produce quality wines that can be tasted in their cellars.
Anyone with an eye for the arts should head to The Gallery of Modern Art. The Gallery has been operating as a part of the Museum in Smederevo since 2005. It is located on the main town square, the Republic Square, and has a representative exhibition area. Expert services of the Gallery, with the help of the gallery Art Council, create programs every year filled with rich and varied exhibitions in the field of contemporary art. The gallery is open all year and the admission is free.
For one week in the summer, the international Fortress Theatre Festival comes to Smederevo. This festival is by its given position and architecture determined as an ambiental festival. A site-specific theatre festival under open skies, in a fortress that is an ideal setting for an attractive theatre program, is obviously lacking in a summer theatre offer in Serbia.
Theatre is a big thing in Smederevo. In the name of glory of The Great Serbian Comedian Branislav Nusic, the festival Nusic’s Days is held each April in the Centre for Culture. This unique festival in the country gathers the admirers of Nusic’s humor, theater ensembles, theatre critics and national and international writers, more than 25 years.
